'Bottoms,' more LGBTQ rom-com movies, TV, books to make you laugh, cry this Pride Month

The queer community is nothing if not resilient; finding joy despite pain, even as LGBTQ rights are in jeopardy across the U.S. From television to movies to books, there's a queer story out there generated to make you to laugh and cry in the best way possible.
"Red, White and Royal Blue" starring Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2023, bringing to life the 2019 novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston. This Pride Month, we're looking back at some of the best romantic comedies to watch or read, from "Fire Island" to "Bottoms."

Based on the 2019 book of the same name, "Red, White and Royal Blue" is a story of an unlikely romance between a U.S. president's son and a British prince. Two men developing a friendship, a flirtation, mutual crushes, kissing, sex, love ā it was all there, without question.

"Fire Island" is a story of love and friendship inspired by Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." Set on the coastal island neighbor of Long Island, Fire Island is often regarded as the "gay mecca." In the film, Noah (Joel Kim Booster) is set on making his and best friend Howie's (Bowen Yang) experience the best one they've had yet. The pair, along with friends Keegan (TomaĢs Matos), Luke (Matt Rogers) and Max (Torian Miller), have to navigate lust and unexpected love after their rich older lesbian friend Erin (Margaret Cho) reveals she has to sell her beach house and it will be the crew's final summer there.

"Crush" follows Paige Evans (Rowan Blanchard) who has yet to fall in love, partially due to her longstanding crush to popular highschooler Gabriela Campos (Isabella Ferreira). The rom-com gets complicated as Paige has to navigate between her crush and a love interest she didn't see coming.

Casey McQuiston's "I Kissed Shara Wheeler," which scored a four out of four star review from USA TODAY, tells the complicated high school romance between Chloe Green and her nemesis and valedictorian competition Shara Wheeler. The teens' relationship shifts after Shara kisses her and then abandons their small Alabama town leading Chloe, and all of the others who have kissed Shara, in a search for her once-enemy.Ā

HBO comedy series "Betty," inspired by the movie "Skate Kitchen," is based on a group of five female teen skateboarders navigating a male-dominant sport. Though the show isn't inherently a rom-com, it does show the queer relationships of two of the skaters: Kirt (Nina Moran) and Honeybear (Kabrina Adams). Kirt is a lesbian who prefers fun over settling down and Honeybear has had relationships with the opposite sex but prefers not to put a label on anything.

"The Half of It" explores the story of teen Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) who unexpectedly falls for Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire), all while jock Paul Munksy (Daniel Diemer) is depending on Ellie to be his wingman.Ā

Susie Dumond's "Queerly Beloved" tells the story of semi-closeted queer baker Amy, who is fired from a Christian baker after her boss discovers she's a lesbian. The mid-2010s Oklahoma-based book shows Amy's peculiar career shift as a bridesmaid for hire. As she finds interest in new-to-town Charley, she wonders if she's able to exist in the wedding industry that does not support her sexuality.

"Love, Victor" is a follow-up series to the movie "Love, Simon," which was inspired by Becky Albertalli's book "Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda." In Simon's (Nick Robinson) case, the teen was forced to come out as gay after being blackmailed. Victor (Michael Cimino) writes to Simon for guidance as he tries to navigate his own sexuality in a new school and a less supportive home environment than Simon. The coming-of-age series has plenty of moments of joy mixed with tear-jerking scenes.

"Happiest Season"Ā tells the story of Abby (Kristen Stewart) who has grand plans to propose to Harper (Mackenzie Davis) at her parents house over Christmas, only to discover Harper's family doesn't know she's gay. On the side of caution, the rom-com toes the line between holiday joy and heartbreak over the couple having to live in secret.

Alison Cochrun's "The Charm Offensive" is a queer twist on "The Bachelor" that fans have been wanting. The book is based on the fictional reality dating show "Ever After," where editors are overzealous with drama cuts and contestants are focused on fame. When Charlie, a disgraced tech giant, is cast as the season's "Prince Charming," he finds himself gravitating to the hopeless romantic producer Dev.

Netflix's "Feel Good" is a semi-autobiographical series by comedian Mae Martin. The series shows Mae balancing a relationship with new girlfriend George (Charlotte Ritchie), recovery and discovering who she is.

Christmas movies can be all-year movies. Netflix's first gay holiday romantic comedyĀ "Single All The Way" reimagines the cliche tale of best friends who fake date only to discover real feelings. Nick (Philemon Chambers) and Peter's (Michael Urie) story will tug at your heartstrings.

Netflix's "Heartstopper"is an English coming-of-age series about LGBTQ teens navigating friendship and romance. Dubbed a "boy meets boy" love story, the show is based on a graphic novel by Alice Oseman, who wrote the show herself.

Netflix's "The Prom" is a celebrity-packed musical rom-com adaptation ofĀ Matthew Sklar'sĀ 2018 Broadway musical of the same name. The film follows high school teenĀ Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman), a young lesbian, who wants to bring her girlfriend to prom against her school's policy.
