On Feb. 6, 1952, Princess Elizabeth, then just 25, was in a treehouse-style lodge in a remote part of Kenya, where she and husband Prince Philip were on holiday and she was thrilled to be taking pictures of wildlife all around. Unbeknownst to her at the time, back home in Britain her father, King George VI, had died, making her the new sovereign. At modern Treetops Lodge in Aberdare National Park in Nyeri, Kenya, they're very proud of that history.

A photo of the original Kenyan treehouse-style lodge where then-Princess Elizabeth II was staying the night she became queen. She was deep in the Kenyan forest spotting wildlife from the treetops with her camera when her father, King George VI, died on Feb. 6, 1952, at Sandringham. This picture was taken on April 10, 2021, at modern Treetops Lodge in Aberdare National Park in Kenya.

As far as these buffalo are concerned, perhaps not much has changed since 1952 near the original treehouse-style lodge where Princess Elizabeth, with her husband, Prince Philip, and a royal entourage stopped for a brief holiday in Kenya before a planned royal tour standing in for her ailing father. Instead, they rushed home to London where she was proclaimed queen.
