Christina Applegate, more stars open up about chronic illness, health issues

March 25, 2026Updated Nov. 3, 2026, 10:40 p.m. ET
Celebrities including Selma Blair , Jada Pinkett Smith , Selena Gomez , Justin Bieber and Michael J. Fox have spoken openly about their health challenges. Here are more stars who've shared their experiences with chronic illnesses, medical diagnoses and health scares. Christina Applegate revealed in August 2021 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis , an autoimmune disease, months earlier. However, in an Oct. 20, 2026 episode of her "MeSsY" podcast, the Emmy-winning actress, 54, revealed she had been misdiagnosed . Applegate tearfully recalled her doctor telling her, "Congratulations, you don't have MS." But the news brought little relief, as she continues experiencing debilitating symptoms, including weakness, pain, fatigue and difficulty walking. "This may come as great news, but to me, it comes as I'm back at square one," Applegate said. “I was hiking and running and playing tennis in January 2021. By June of 2021, I couldn't walk anymore, man,” she told USA TODAY earlier in 2026 while discussing her memoir, " You with the Sad Eyes ." Doctors are still investigating the cause.

In early 2023, Jamie Foxx sparked concern when his daughter, Corinne, revealed the actor "experienced a medical complication." Foxx explained in his 2024 Netflix special that he'd experienced "a bad headache" on April 11, 2023. Moments after he'd asked for an aspirin, he lost consciousness — and doesn't remember the ensuing 20 days. During this comatose period, Foxx was taken to a doctor, who administered a cortisone shot and sent him home. Then a follow-up appointment with a doctor revealed Foxx had experienced a stroke caused by a brain bleed. The exact cause of the stroke was not determined. Foxx said he reemerged from his stroke-induced coma in May 2023. The "Blame It" rapper said he subsequently found himself in a wheelchair and was told he could no longer walk. He worked to regain his mobility and made his first major public appearance in December . "I lost everything, but the only thing I could hold onto was my sense of humor," Foxx said. "I couldn't necessarily walk that good, I couldn't talk that good, but I didn't let go of my funny."

Disney Channel star Ashley Tisdale has been open about her struggle with alopecia , the medical term for hair loss. In a video posted in January 2023 on Instagram , Tisdale shared that she first experienced it in her 20s at the front of her hairline and again after dealing with moving, a home renovation and a TV project. "Nothing major – just a small section behind my ear – but still, it was happening, and not for the first time. A few years ago, the same thing happened when I was overly stressed, so I knew exactly what I was experiencing: alopecia," she wrote. Although the actress said she was initially "embarrassed" to talk about it, she's found strength in others who have. Tisdale said her alopecia is largely stress-related and found prioritizing self-care, an autoimmune paleo diet and platelet-rich plasma treatment when she is experiencing hair loss are some treatments that have helped.

Fellow Disney Channel star Demi Lovato has publicly struggled with addiction and an eating disorder. In a 2017 documentary, Lovato revealed they still hadn't "conquered" the eating disorder and faced a relapse after splitting with their boyfriend of six years, Wilmer Valderrama. "Food is still the biggest challenge in my life," they revealed in the documentary. Lovato said in a July 2023 interview that they are sober and in "a more positive mind space" nearly five years after an overdose left them with vision and hearing impairments. "That overdose caused ... a disability. I have vision impairment and hearing impairment to this day," they said on "Andy Cohen Live." "It's a daily constant reminder. You know, anytime I look at something, like, I have blind spots in my vision when I look at your face. And so it's a constant reminder to stay on the right path because I never want that to happen again." Lovato previously revealed in their 2021 docuseries "Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil" that they experienced several strokes, a heart attack, pneumonia and multiple organ failure as a result of their near-fatal overdose in July 2018. This left them "legally blind when I woke up," but they regained some eyesight after.

"Glee" alum Lea Michele began experiencing symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome around 2016, and she's opened up about experiencing side effects like weight gain and skin issues. "I went to a great doctor, and the minute she looked at me, she was like, 'Oh, you have PCOS.' It explained everything," she told People in September 2019. "Through diet, I have been able to manage it. But I am very fortunate. There are way more extreme versions of PCOS that women have a lot of difficulty with – mine is not as intense. Which is why I haven’t really talked about it, because there are women who have it so much more intense."
