As Milly Alcock steps into the role of Supergirl, aka Kara Zor-El, in the DC Universe's newly released film "Supergirl," take a look back at the character's previous live-action portrayals and where the actors are now.

The first actress to play Supergirl in a live-action project, Helen Slater, starred as the eponymous heroine in the 1984 film "Supergirl."

Although the film was met with mixed reactions at the time of its release, Slater's performance remains lauded by fans and an important pillar in Supergirl's on-screen iconography.

Following her portrayal of Supergirl, Slater went on to appear in films like "The Legend of Billie Jean" (1985), "City Slickers" (1991) and "Chantilly Bridge" (2023).
She continued to be a part of the DC Universe, providing the voice of Talia al-Ghul in "Batman: The Animated Series" and appearing in shows like "Smallville" and 2015's "Supergirl."

The next major live-action portrayal of Supergirl came from Laura Vandervoort, who joined The CW's "Smallville" in Season 7.

After her time on "Smallville," Vandervoort went on to star in other television projects including "Bitten" (2014), "V Wars" (2019) and "Murdoch Mysteries" (2025).
She also appeared in a slew of films including the 2017 horror flick "Jigsaw."

Vandervoort continued to honor her Supergirl past, appearing in a brief role in The CW's "Supergirl" series.

Perhaps the most recognizable live-action Supergirl, Melissa Benoist played the iconic heroine for six seasons on the "Supergirl" series from 2015 to 2021.

While she'll always be known among fans for playing Kara, Benoist continued to expand her filmography after her time on "Supergirl."
The actress went on to star in projects like "The Girls on the Bus" (2024) and "The Waterfront" (2025).
