More Americans are swapping nightlife for “day life.” I was curious, and went inside NYC’s sober morning rave scene to see why. Hundreds of people at this Daybreaker morning party dance at sunrise, then go to work.

Tetiana Samokysh, 37, brought her now 2 1/2-year old Sophie to her first DayBreaker when she was 6 months old. “What we miss is the village, where younger generations learn from older and elderly pass their wisdom,” Samokysh says.

This merge of wellness and rave culture is part of a bigger shift toward intentional socializing. According to data from Eventbrite, coffee clubbing, morning dance parties and sauna and ice bath events are up 478%.

“No one judges you,” says 34-year-old Daniel Ahmadizadeh, who has attended more than 20 Daybreaker events. “Once you feel that, you keep wanting to go back to that, because at night, I think people seem to have more inhibitions and more reservations.”

A 52-year-old mom, Whitney Keyes, tells me Daybreaker feels like “a wake-up shot of pure bouncing in your feet, dancing joy.” A moment later, I see her hugging Agrawal, who many in the crowd refer to as “Mama Radha.”

Participants say they see the morning rave series as part of a trend to combat loneliness, and people young and old are gathering to take part in it.
