National chains shutter locations across the U.S.

Joann Fabric and Crafts will be closing all of its 800-plus stores after declaring bankruptcy a second time, after an initial bankruptcy filing in March 2024, where the company emerged as a private company before filing again in January 2025.

Big Lots had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2024, citing declining sales and mounting debt. The retailer announced that some locations will remain open after it was acquired by a new owner in 2025.

Macy's has said it plans to close about 150 stores by the end of 2026, leaving the once-iconic retailer with just 350 locations across the U.S. as it restructures to avoid bankruptcy.

A 99 Cents Only store is seen in Los Angeles, California. The discount chain, with some 14,000 employees, announced on April 4, 2024 that it will close all 371 of its stores in California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas after more than four decades of business.

Walgreens is adjusting its strategy as it plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years. About 500 locations are expected to be shuttered by the end of the company's fiscal year 2025, which ends this coming August.

Dollar General announced that it is planning to close 96 Dollar General stores and 45 Popshelf stores during the first quarter of 2025 as part of a "store portfolio optimization review."

Rite Aid announced on May 5, 2025, that it had begun Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The company, which currently operates 1,240 stores across 15 states, has begun a process of selling and closing its locations.

The number of Subway locations in the United States dipped below 20,000 last year, with the chain having closed 631 restaurants in 2024 alone, according to franchise disclosure documents analyzed by USA TODAY.
