From propeller planes to high-tech jets, Air Force One has evolved into a flying White House, carrying presidents and American power worldwide. Look back at its history. This Douglas VC-54C V.I.P. transport, called the ÒSacred CowÓ, was used by two presidents, Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. The plane was used between 1942-1945 and eventually retired in 1961.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Air Force C-121 super constellation "Columbine III" was used from 1954 until he left office in 1961. The term "Air Force One" was first used while Eisenhower was on "Columbine II" on a flight in Miami. The pilot was concerned the President's flight might be confused with other commercial plane.
