YeonJoon H., a 12th grader from Troy, Michigan is named a finalist. "The main theme of the flag is 'Intertwining the past, the present, and the future' symbolized through many different ways. The intertwining strands of alternating red and white symbolizes that the past intertwines with each other, but also with the present. The present is symbolized through the fifty stars that are dotted throughout the entire flag; it is in between the strands to show that the founding ideas from the cooperation of the initial 13 states continue to be important to us today. The strands are shaped like graduation cords to not only celebrate the past, but also to show that we should continue to move towards the future, like how a graduation not only celebrates the accomplishment but also is a way to send off graduates into a promising future. Another way this flag celebrates the past is through the two feathers at the bottom of the flag, which symbolizes the Native American heritage. It is at the bottom to emphasize that it was the root and soil that this country was built upon. The tone of blue is changed from the dark navy blue in the original US flag to a sky blue to show the American Dream. Like in the Great Gatsby, I hope that the light blue of the flag and other symbols encased in it is going to reflect on the eyes of the people that look at the flag to invoke hopes and dreams for a bright American future. It helped me reflect on the American values and how the current US flag embodies it. I made my flag through a paper draft -> digital design -> AI cleanup. ChatGPT, I used it to edit and final touch the flag to increase the quality of the frayed ends and feathers on the flag."

Asym K., an 11th grader from Troy, Michigan is named a finalist. "This redesigned flag presents a vision of the United States centered on unity, peace, and forward progress rather than traditional structure. The dark navy background represents stability and resilience, serving as a foundation for the nation’s values. At the center, a white dove carrying an olive branch symbolizes peace, hope, and the pursuit of harmony both within the country and globally. Positioned in front of a rising golden sun, the dove suggests a new beginning and continuous renewal, reflecting the idea that the nation is always evolving toward something better. Encircling the dove are fifty stars arranged in a loose ring rather than a rigid grid. This circular formation emphasizes equality among the states and the idea that no single part outweighs another. It also creates a sense of unity and connection, reinforcing the concept of a shared national identity. The flowing red, white, and blue ribbons across the flag replace traditional stripes with movement. These wave-like forms represent the dynamic and ever-changing nature of American society, shaped by different cultures, ideas, and generations. The addition of gold accents highlights opportunity, ambition, and the pursuit of excellence, suggesting that progress is both valuable and intentional. Overall, this flag moves away from strict tradition to communicate a more symbolic message: a nation defined not just by its past, but by its commitment to growth, unity, and a better future. Designing my flag made me realize that democracy is about representing everyone equally, not just following tradition. Changing the layout and symbols showed me how a flag can reflect ideas like unity, peace, and progress. It also made me understand that symbols shape how people see their country and values. I designed my flag using digital tools to combine simple shapes, colors, and symbols into one clean image. I chose a dove, stars in a circle, and flowing lines to represent peace, equality, and unity instead of a rigid structure. I designed it this way to show that America is always changing and should focus on inclusion and progress rather than just tradition. I used Canva AI to help create the final version of my flag. I came up with the design idea myself and then used Canva to generate and refine the image based on my concept."

Henry W., an 11th grader from Troy, Michigan is named a finalist. "This reimagination of the American Flag links both the nation's past and its future. While keeping the original color palette of red, white and blue this new design keeps a connection to the United States past while symbolizing how far we've come in unity. The one giant star instead of 50 stars shows the unity of each state and displays a bond that transcends both geographic and political borders. One star shows that the people of the United States are working as one large body instead of 50 smaller bodies. The star also represents a collective responsibility of the citizens to continue to express what they believe in. The interwoven stripes represent the struggles experienced by many to unify the people of the United States while emphasizing that everybody is different and wants to achieve their own dreams. The interwoven flag shows the struggles many still go through to achieve their personal American Dream. Although this reimagined American flag embodies all these positive and patriotic ideas, it also shows that we as a country and as a people are not perfect through the imperfections like the change in how the red and white lines are drawn on the bottom and top halves of the flag. Creating the flag made me realize how important a flags symbols can be to a country. I used ai to create a flag with one star that had an interwoven pattern. I designed it this way to represent unity and the struggles people have gone through to get to where we are."

Anmol K., an 11th grader from Troy, Michigan is named a finalist. "This flag represents the current state of the US. There is a political gap between the left and right, which is displayed by the stark contrast of blue and red of the two sides. The two sides do not mesh or have any overlapping, as I feel this depicts the widening political gap in the country, where people lean heavily towards one side or another rather than acknowledging the other side’s valid arguments. The center of the flag features an oil rig, since one of the country’s main priorities at the moment is to solve the problem of oil. The rig is outlined in black as to symbolize the negative conflicts that have arisen because of it. The detailed markings on the flag represent many of the jobs that make up the country. The gears and circuitry represent the tech side of America, while the factories, electric grid, and tractors make up the hard labor workforce. Neither side covers over 50%, as they are both integral to the country. The flag still holds some of the structure of the original, with stars on the left and organized stripes on the right, showing that the country still holds its integral values despite conflicts. It showed me that the country was a lot more split than i had realized, and how different industries play a vital role in the economy despite being vastly different. I made it using ai, and I asked it to make a flag with the symbols that I felt were meaningful."

Haaris S., an 11th grader from Troy Michigan was named a finalist. "The flag I made shows an understanding of America as a big quilt. Instead of the red and white stripes, various cultural patterns of the current population of the United States have been included in order to show that to be an American is to come from many different backgrounds but form one nation. In terms of civic, it shows that a democracy is strongest when its citizens unite and include voices of minorities and immigrants. The stripes along the bottom and right side of the flag contain patterns of Native American and African cloth. There are also patterns of Hispanics and Asians, it also has graffiti art which symbolizes our new society and culture. All these symbols placed next to each other signify their significance in creating the overall fabric which resembles a real community and includes every culture. Instead of regular stars, the field of blue has a number of different symbols in the shape of stars. Among them are symbols representing various religions. It stands for the multicultural background of our nation, created by our beliefs. This flag will make people realize their identity and find parts of themselves or their families heritage in. It shows that a democracy is strongest when its citizens unite and include voices of minorities and immigrants. I made my flag with the inclusion of different heritages, cultures, religions to show that America is stronger when we appreciate each other. ChatGPT, I used it to actually design the flag but I told everything to put on it like the symbols, which art to use from different heritages"

Varun S., a 12th grader from Troy, Michigan is named a finalist. "This American flag incorporates all the industries the United States of America is known for. I wanted to pay homage to the original American flag by keeping the 50 stars and the red-and-white stripe design. In addition, major industries in America are manufacturing and agriculture, which is demonstrated by the tractor and green color. As well as agriculture, there is car manufacturing in Detroit, Michigan, which is my hometown, so I added that to the flag with trucks. I added classic car stencils such as the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger, which are embodiments of the American muscle car mentality. This classicality is continued through the wheat and corn icons on the flag, which are America's main produce and my support for American farmers. The gear on the 5 stripes is to pay respect to the industry that remains in America and how much value I have for them staying and producing in the country. The automotive assembly line is one of the greatest American inventions, and as such, should be placed on the flag. The last detail on the flag is the different barns placed on the flag, which represent how many types of farms, from small family farms to big corporate farms, and that they are equally valued. It deepened my understanding of democracy by making me learn more about American ideals. I used generative software and Canva. I designed it that way to represent the new generation of America and pay homage to the past."

Jayden S., an 11th grader from Troy, Michigan, is named a finalist. "This version of the American Flag is called the 'Resilient Prism.' This perspective emphasizes the concept of the nation’s blueprint for a modern Union. The dark navy block features a single prismatic star. This star is constructed by exactly 40 unique, interlocking shards, along with 10 lines crossing along the flag. This specific count represents each of the fifty states, which are no longer separated in a grid, but are structurally formed to make a singular entity. The fifty shards have an iridescent finish, allowing the Union to reflect a full color spectrum, symbolizing that American strength is not singular, but made of diverse perspectives of the people who live in it. The straight, silver lines tie the historical 13 colonies to the modern structure of a 50-shard Union. The 13 horizontal stripes feature a topographic gradient in crimson, which visualizes the depth and effort of a nation that is deeply rooted in physical land and history that is still evolving. When you look at the traditional American flag, most of the symbols and elements are separated. In my design, the shards of the star are separate, but together they make a whole. This is truly how America is; we are our own people, but together we make a unified country. I made my flag partially on an app called Autodesk Sketchbook, while also using inspiration and images from google/safari and putting it together using photoshop. I designed it like this so it could be technically sound and realistic. I used Gemini, purely to figure out how to make the shards come together in an even amount basically to provide a template for the star. I also used it to come up with the background’s general design."
