An aerial view of structures on Nyangai Island, on April 30, 2025. More than two million people living along Sierra Leone's coasts are threatened by rising sea levels, according to a study conducted in June 2024 by the Sierra Leone National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), a leading international organization monitoring internal displacement. This West African country is one of the most threatened in the world by global warming, and its coastal region "is very vulnerable to the increasingly frequent and severe phenomena of erosion and rising waters caused by the effects of climate change and human activities," the study stresses. It also highlights the impoverishment of these populations, whose food security and health have deteriorated.

A water-dropping plane drops its load as a wildfire burns through forested areas near the towns of Xerta and Paüls on July 8, 2025 in the Tarragona province in the autonomous region of Catalonia, Spain. Extreme heat and wind fuel the rapid spread of the flames, prompting lockdowns and an ongoing emergency response.

This photograph shows the dried stream bed of a river arm feeding the Yovkovtsi dam, one of the main water sources for the Svishtov region, near the town of Elena on July 2, 2025. Filling jerry cans, running the washing machine, or taking a shower: you have to choose. In the Bulgarian village of Gorna Studena, water is becoming increasingly scarce each year, due to aging pipelines and climate change.

Hikers rest and take pictures on the Cilo Glaciers of Turkey's southeastern Hakkari province, on July 13, 2025. As global temperatures rise amid human-caused climate change, new sections of the mountains that were once capped in ice are melting fast year after year. A UN report on desertification worldwide estimates that 88 percent of Turkey's territory is at risk: rainfall is expected to decrease by 30 percent by the end of the century, while temperatures are expected to rise by 5 to 6 celsius compared to the averages recorded between 1961 and 1990.
