Underclassmen winning the Heisman Trophy

Navy quarterback Roger Staubach, seen here in a win over Notre Dame, failed to recapture the Heisman in 1964 after suffering an ankle injury early in the season.

Former Ohio State running back Archie Griffin is the only two-time winner in Heisman Trophy history. He repeated as a senior despite scoring only four touchdowns on the year.

Houston's high-flying pass-first offense helped Andre Ware land the 1990 Heisman Trophy. Perhaps knowing that it could never get any better, Ware entered the NFL Draft after his junior season.

Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy as a junior in 1990. He had a stronger season statistically in 1991 but finished third in the voting behind Desmond Howard.

Oklahoma quarterback Jason White took home the Heisman Trophy in 2003 and finished third in 2004, perhaps stealing votes away from his teammate, running back Adrian Peterson.

USC quarterback Matt Leinart won the Heisman trophy as a junior in 2004 before finishing third in 2005... or second, depending on whether you count Reggie Bush's first-place finish.

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy in 2007. He finished a close third in the voting as a junior and fifth as a senior.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford won the Heisman as a sophomore, when he led one of the most prolific offenses in FBS history, but injuries cost him most of his junior season.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram became the latest sophomore to win the Heisman in 2009, when he helped the Crimson Tide win the national championship. Injuries dropped him out of the race a year later.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton ran away with the Heisman in 2010, thanks not only to his superb individual season but for the way he carried the Tigers to the national championship.

Robert Griffin III's breakout game during his Heisman Trophy run in 2011 came during a late win over Oklahoma. Griffin III, now the Redskins, led Baylor to a nearly unprecedented 10-win season.
