Vatican City: Learn about the world's smallest sovereign state

Vatican City is the smallest country in the world, becoming its own sovereign state in 1929. It is enclosed by a 2-mile border with Italy in Rome. According to City Rome Tours, it is one-eighth the size of New York’s Central Park at just over 100 acres.

There are no taxes in Vatican City, but the sovereign independent territory does mint its own euros, operates media outlets, prints its own stamps, issues passports and license plates.

The Vatican has its own flag and anthem. The majority of Vatican City’s hundreds of citizens live abroad. As of 2023, the population is 764 people, according to the World Population Review.
