Shopping for a Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey? How minivans compare

Choosing between two minivan stalwarts, the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey? Here's how they stack up.

Dec. 18, 2025, 2:00 p.m. ET
  • The Toyota Sienna is an anomaly in its segment due to its hybrid-only powertrain.
  • Honda's Odyssey minivan is extremely popular despite being more expensive and less efficient than the Sienna.

Minivans may not be as popular as their heyday but several popular automotive brands still produce competitive van models.

Toyota makes one of the only standard hybrid minivans on the market, the Toyota Sienna. Fellow Japanese automaker Honda also produces a popular van model, the Honda Odyssey. How do these two compare side-by-side?

The 2026 Toyota Sienna's gas mileage is segment-leading

Toyota's 2026 Sienna starts at $40,120. It has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 245 horsepower. The Sienna achieves 36 miles per gallon in the city and 36 miles per gallon on the highway.

  • Dual power sliding side doors
  • Remote keyless entry system with push button start
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Blind-spot monitor

The Toyota Sienna's most appealing trait is its gas mileage. It has an 18.0-gallon tank. Thanks to a hybrid powertrain, the Sienna can travel for up to 648 miles on a full tank, which is astounding for its segment. U.S. News & World Report praises the Sienna's "comfortable ride, adult-friendly seating in all three rows, and user-friendly tech."

Toyota's Sienna is a solid daily driver for folks with families or drivers who regularly travel long distances with a large group of passengers. It's ideal for road trips and shuttling kids safely to and from sporting events.

The Honda Odyssey is a minivan staple

The 2026 Honda Odyssey starts at $42,795. It uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine to produce 280 horsepower. The Odyssey earns 19 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway.

  • Leather-trimmed seats
  • One-touch power moonroof
  • Wireless phone charger
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel

The Honda Odyssey is loaded with great standard features for the money that are often reserved for upper trim levels. It also has surprisingly engaging driving dynamics for its size. Additionally, it has one of the roomiest third rows in its segment.

Kelley Blue Book compliments the Odyssey's "family-first interior" and "excellent resale value." It's a staple in its segment because it's safe, spacious, and practical. The Odyssey hit the scene as a 1995 model year and has been battling the Sienna for supremacy ever since its competitor was introduced for the 1998 model year.

2026 Toyota Sienna vs. 2026 Honda Odyssey

Though the Sienna and Odyssey Japanese minivans share many traits, there are some clear differences between the two vans. Toyota's minivan is the more affordable model by $2,675.

Toyota's van is significantly more efficient as well, thanks to its hybrid-only powertrain. It achieves around 13 more miles per gallon than the Honda Odyssey. The Toyota Sienna is the obvious choice for the budget-conscious because it's cheaper to purchase and to refuel over time.

When it comes to value, the best choice isn't as obvious. Honda's minivan offers more upscale standard features and a slightly more refined interior, which is important for long-term ownership in the eyes of some drivers.

The Odyssey's superior driving dynamics can make it more fun to drive than the Sienna. Additionally, it has more maximum cargo space than the Sienna (155.8 cubic feet behind the first row). If you're looking for a more traditional minivan experience, the Odyssey is the way to go. If you want the most miles per gallon that you can get out of a new van, the Sienna is the best choice.
