Activists against Jeff Bezos hide 'urine' bottles at the Met Gala
Amaris EncinasThis year's Met Gala has drawn the ire of activists, with a group calling for the boycott of fashion's biggest night claiming to have hidden bottles of fake urine in the days leading up to the event.
A video shared by the social media account "Everyone Hates Elon" on Saturday, May 2, shows people placing small bottles around the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The group said the bottles contain water and food coloring.
The group claims to have hidden hundreds of "piss bottles," a reference to past allegations against Amazon that workers were forced to urinate in bottles to meet productivity demands, a claim the company has previously denied.
The protest targets Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, for hosting the Met Gala. Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez, the lead sponsors of the Met Gala and its accompanying exhibition, are serving as the event’s honorary chairs.
"Jeff Bezos's company Amazon is literally being sued for forcing workers to urinate in bottles. Amazon avoids MILLIONS in tax and Bezos is one of the world's richest men," the group wrote in a May 2 Instagram post. "The Met Museum is taking the PISS by having Jeff honoured as their Gala host."
"When they celebrate Trump’s billionaires, let’s ridicule them instead 💋" the group added.
Met security quickly spotted and resolved the incident, which did not disrupt operations or interrupt guests who visited the museum that day, according to a museum spokesperson.
Despite reports claiming that hundreds of bottles were distributed, the number appears to be significantly less, per the museum. No protests or actions have taken place at the Met Gala on Monday.
Why are people protesting this year's Met Gala?
People are boycotting this year's Met Gala because of Bezos' involvement in the annual fashion fundraiser. From subway cars to the sides of buildings, boycott signage has appeared across New York City ahead of the star-studded event.
One poster read: "There's no dressing it up. Met Gala chair Jeff Bezos avoids tax, enables ICE and backs Trump. Don't let him get away with it."
Another giant poster featured a tear gas container on a red carpet and said, "The Bezos Met Gala... Brought to you by the firm that powers ICE."
The posters and projections appear to be campaigned by members of a group called "Everyone Hates Elon." Members of this activist organization have run similar campaigns against other billionaires in the past.
