Anna Wintour shades Anne Hathaway in 'Devil Wears Prada' Oscars moment
Anne Hathaway played Andy Sachs in the aughties cult classic, while Anna Wintour has long been believed to be the inspiration for Sachs' icy boss, Miranda Priestly.
Edward SegarraWearing florals on Oscars night? Groundbreaking.
Anne Hathaway, who starred in the fashion dramedy "The Devil Wears Prada," united with real-life fashion royalty Anna Wintour during the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15, to present the award for best costume design.
The Oscar-winning actress and former Vogue editor-in-chief strutted down the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles as Madonna's "Vogue" played. Hathaway wore a strapless, black floor-length gown with blush floral accents, while Wintour looked sharp in a white dress and black blazer ensemble.
The joint appearance coincides with the 20th anniversary of "The Devil Wears Prada," which was released in 2006, and an upcoming sequel.

"Whether it's two distinct jewel-toned hats, a meticulously crafted headdress, a simple pair of semi-rimless eyeglasses, complex and dramatic pieces that bring to life a gothic classic or watching red turn rust in 16th-century England," Hathaway said, "A character's costume is key to telling a story."
But it wasn't all fun and pop culture nostalgia.

Hathaway, who plays journalist-turned-fashion-assistant Andy Sachs in "The Devil Wears Prada," turned to Wintour for some sartorial advice. Wintour has long been believed to be the inspiration for Sachs' icy boss Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep.
"One could argue that one's wardrobe in real life is also key," a suddenly visibly anxious Hathaway said. "Does it make one appear elegant and attractive on, say, the most important night in Hollywood when, say, the most important people in fashion will be judging how one looks?"
She added, "Anna, just curious, what do you think of my dress tonight?"

Wintour, who had quietly put on her iconic black sunglasses, ignored Hathaway's question altogether, suggesting that she wasn't a fan of the actress' Oscars look. "And the nominees are..." Wintour said.
The award went to "Frankenstein" costume designer Kate Hawley.
Anna Wintour channels Miranda Priestly during Oscars bit
When it comes to "The Devil Wears Prada" lore, Wintour is in on the joke.
The fashion icon made a playful reference to the film while presenting the award for best makeup and hairstyling alongside Hathaway.

"Anna, would you like to read the nominees?" Hathaway said, to which Wintour replied, "Thank you, Emily," a nod to Emily Blunt's character, Emily Charlton.
In the film, Emily Charlton worked as Miranda Priestly's junior assistant before Hathaway's Andy Sachs, which leads Miranda to mistakenly call Andy "Emily" at the beginning of her job.
Anne Hathaway to star in 'Devil Wears Prada' sequel
Hathaway is set to reprise her "Devil Wears Prada" role alongside castmates Streep, Blunt and Stanley Tucci in "The Devil Wears Prada 2," a sequel to the aughties cult classic.
Years after manning phones and delivering "the book," Andy Sachs has returned to the world of fashion with a renewed sense of purpose as the new features editor at Runway Magazine.
While 20th Century Studios has kept details about the sequel's plot close to the vest, it is likely that the storyline of "The Devil Wears Prada 2" will take inspiration from Lauren Weisberger's novel, "Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns" (the first "Devil Wears Prada" film is an adaptation of Weisberger's debut novel).
The book offers an intimate look at Andy's life years after she left Miranda and Runway.
"Almost 20 years after making their iconic turn as Miranda, Andy, Emily and Nigel — Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci return to the fashionable streets of New York City and the sleek offices of Runway Magazine in the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2006 phenomenon that defined a generation," 20th Century Studios said in a Feb. 1 announcement.
"The Devil Wears Prada 2" is scheduled to be released on May 1.
