Prince George has a posh new school – See the $84K Eton College

Updated June 16, 2026, 11:14 a.m. ET

Prince George will soon be a teenager, and he's gearing up to start a new school.

The eldest child of Prince William and Princess Kate will follow in his father's footsteps and attend the prestigious Eton College in Berkshire, England, come September, Kensington Palace confirmed in an email to USA TODAY, Tuesday, June 16.

Eton is a boarding school for boys that was founded in the 15th century by King Henry VI. It costs £63,000 a year (around $84,400) and provides education from the ages of 13 to 18. George turns 13 on July 22.

The school is just across the river from the ancient Windsor Castle, which serves as a working royal palace, and is a short drive from George's family home, Forest Lodge.

Prince William enrolled at Eton College in September 1995, with younger brother Prince Harry joining in 1998. Princess Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, also studied at the school. Twenty British prime ministers, including Boris Johnson and David Cameron, also studied there.

There has been much speculation in Britain over which school the young royal will attend, with some reports claiming he would follow in his mother's footsteps instead and attend Marlborough College, Kate's old school.

George is second in line to the British throne, after his father, Prince William. Over the weekend he attended Trooping the Colour, an annual ceremony that marks the official birthday of the reigning monarch – in this instance, George's grandfather, King Charles III. The 12-year-old was seen riding in a carriage with his mother, Princess Kate and his siblings, while waving to crowds who had flooded the streets of London.

George currently attends Lambrook School, a private school in the Berkshire countryside for children aged 3-13. His siblings Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, also attend the school.

Prince William has spoken fondly of his time at Eton, with British media reporting that during his time there he would pop into Windsor Castle to visit his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II for afternoon tea.

"I’ve really enjoyed being able to go about Eton as just another student," he told People magazine in 2000 at the end of his time there.
