Mariska Hargitay's husband proposes during her final Broadway show

July 6, 2026, 4:15 p.m. ET

Mariska Hargitay closed out her first Broadway run with a proposal from an audience member.

Before the 62-year-old "Law & Order: SVU" star took her final bow following a six-week stint starring in "Every Brilliant Thing," her husband of nearly 22 years joined her on stage and got down on one knee on July 5.

Hargitay pulled Peter Hermann, who played the narrator's spouse, Sam, by the hand to encourage him to kneel. As he played the audience participation role, he seemed at a loss for words for a few moments before asking, "Will you marry me?"

Hargitay's narrator, of course, accepted the proposal. The couple locked lips and shared a big embrace.

Hermann, with whom she shares three children ranging in age from 14 to 20, joined her onstage at the end of her performance carrying a massive bouquet of flowers.

Hargitay took over the role on May 26, succeeding the the solo show's previous lead, Daniel Radcliffe. Tracee Ellis Ross will next take on the narrator role from July 7 to Aug. 9 at the Hudson Theatre. In the show, the unnamed star reflects on an ever-growing list of things that make life worth living, starting with when they were a child with a mother who attempts suicide.

"Every Brilliant Thing" was Hargitay's first Broadway foray, which she's called "the most thrilling adventure I've ever been on."

"I never thought after 27 seasons of 'SVU' that I'd be saying this is truly the most exciting and different thing and to be surprised like this this late in my career is extraordinary," she said during a June 8 appearance on "Today with Jenna & Sheinelle."

Joining Hermann onstage were several other notable figures, including former "Today" alumni Hoda Kotb and Katie Couric.
