Kate Hudson's surprise Oscar nom even thrilled sleepy daughter Rani

'She saw my name and saw that I was getting very emotional, and it hit her,' says Kate Hudson. 'And she was finally like, "Oh my God, Mommy!" '

Kate Hudson is "thrilled, excited and grateful" for her underdog best actress "Song Sung Blue" Oscar nomination, announced Thursday, Jan. 22.

"It's been an absolutely glorious morning," Hudson tells USA TODAY of her second career Oscar nomination, the first since she was nominated in 2000's "Almost Famous" for best supporting actress. "It really hasn't sunk in totally yet, but it's going to at some point,"

Hudson, 46, says that the early morning Oscar nomination viewing at her Los Angeles home did impact the sleep of daughter Rani Rose, 7, who had snuck into her bed in the middle of the night.

"My alarm went off, and I put on the TV, and my daughter was like, 'What is happening?' She was not having it. She was like 'Mom!' " says Hudson. "I was like, 'Honey, this is important.' And then she got really excited."

At first, Rani Rose, Hudson's daughter with partner Danny Fujikawa, expressed excitement over the "KPop Demon Hunters" song "Golden" getting nominated. But that changed.

"Then she saw my name and saw that I was getting very emotional, and it hit her," says Hudson. "And she was finally like, 'Oh, my God, Mommy!' And I said, 'Yes, honey, I just got nominated for an Oscar.' "

What role is Hudson nominated for in 'Song Sung Blue'?

Hudson portrays Claire Sardina, one-half of the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder, alongside Hugh Jackman, who plays husband Mike Sardina. "Song Sung Blue" is based on the true story of the Milwaukee-area band that rose to regional fame despite emotional hardships.

Hudson's second Oscar nomination was a statistical long shot, with the awards site Gold Derby listing a 17.84 chance of a nomination before Thursday morning. However, the Golden Globe-nominated actress was heartened with an Actor Award (formerly SAG Award) nomination for best actress.

"When that nomination happened, I was so emotional," says Hudson. "That was from the people in our industry, the people who are in the trenches with you. It means so much to me. It's like being in the movie class of 2026."

On Wednesday evening, Hudson was out with Dakota Fanning and her sister Elle Fanning, who stars in the drama "Sentimental Value." Both Elle and Hudson were at peace over their Oscar chances.

"We were sort of going, 'We don't know. Who knows?' We were kind of doing that with each other," says Hudson. "And then when I saw Elle nominated (for best supporting actress) I freaked out."

Nomination is like Hudson's family 'World Series'

There are many celebrations happening in Hudson's family over the news. Mom Goldie Hawn (1970's best supporting actress Oscar winner) and partner Kurt Russell, who cried throughout Hudson's performance in the movie, were thrilled.

"Every parent whose child is nominated is doing a happy dance; it's like our World Series," says Hudson. "My family's text chain is really going off this morning. There are a lot of emojis and GIFs. It's been very celebratory."
