'Marshals' renewed on CBS for Season 2 as 'Yellowstone' spinoff rides

Luke Grimes is riding "Marshals" into Season 2.

CBS announced the renewal of the hit "Yellowstone" spinoff with a release on Thursday, March 12, that heralded "Marshals" as the most-streamed CBS series premiere ever.

"'Marshals' delivered a breakout performance, capturing a massive audience across platforms and quickly establishing itself as one of TV’s most powerful new series," Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment said in the statement.

The March 1 premiere episode, with Grimes returning as Kayce Dutton for the first time since "Yellowstone," was watched by 20.6 million viewers within seven days on the Paramount platforms.

That makes "Marshals" the most-watched network original series premiere, without a football lead in, since 2017's "Young Sheldon."

All of this success is without beloved "Yellowstone" wife Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille), who was revealed to be dead by cancer in Episode 1. But the death does inspire Kayce to leave the idyllic East Camp rancher life and join the team of U.S. Marshals working in the area. So he needs his horse (Grimes is a solid rider thanks to his "Yellowstone" training).

Grimes has some "Yellowstone" carryover company with Brecken Merrill returning as teenaged son Tate. Broken Rock Reservation leaders Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) also return, extending their storyline into "Marshals."
