Rick Moranis, Mel Brooks reveal new details on 'Spaceballs' sequel

Updated April 16, 2026, 11:20 a.m. ET

LAS VEGAS – The Schwartz awakens.

Rick Moranis and other actors from the original "Spaceballs," director Mel Brooks' classic 1987 "Star Wars" spoof, took the stage at CinemaCon April 15 alongside their new costars in the upcoming sequel. They presented footage from the follow-up to movie theater owners and also gave it a title: "Spaceballs: The New One," coming to cinemas April 23, 2027.

Brooks didn't make the trip to Vegas but did appear in a pre-recorded teaser that dropped online, explaining why it's not called "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money."

"Because after all these years, I found the money. It was in my basement," Brooks joked. He also mentioned that people for decades have been bugging him about another "Spaceballs" and promised that the sequel "is just like the old one, only newer.

Lewis Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, director Josh Greenbaum, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman and Josh Gad came to CinemaCon to promote their upcoming film "Spaceballs: The New One."

"I'll see you at the movies, and may the Schwartz be with you," Brooks added, bringing back his Yoda-esque catchphrase from the original film.

Bill Pullman starred as the rogueish Lone Starr and Daphne Zuniga was Princess Vespa in the first "Spaceballs," alongside Brooks as the wise Yogurt, the late John Candy as sidekick Barf and Moranis as the villainous Dark Helmet.

Moranis, marking his first live-action film role since 1997's "Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves," joined Pullman and Zuniga during the Amazon MGM Studios' CinemaCon presentation. Also on hand were director Josh Greenbaum and newcomers Josh Gad and Lewis Pullman, who costars with his dad. During a humorous cast Q&A, Lewis Pullman was asked about the process of getting cast, and he quipped, "I was born."

They also showed a "Spaceballs 2" sizzle reel to the crowd, which took jabs at the Disney-era "Star Wars" movies as well as the "Avatar" franchise. According to a studio release, plot details "are being kept under lock, key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield," but other newly announced cast members include Keke Palmer and Anthony Carrigan.

Gad, who also cowrote and coproduced "The New One," first teased his involvement with the new "Spaceballs" two years ago. "Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I've ever worked on and I am so freaking excited," Gad wrote in an Instagram post.
