Why Anne Hathaway's 'Devil Wears Prada 2' dress is already iconic
Anne Hathaway went viral last summer on the set of "The Devil Wears Prada 2" with her jaw-dropping Gabriela Hearst dress. Here's how it came about.
Patrick RyanNEW YORK ‒ “The Devil Wears Prada 2” has no shortage of head-turning fashion.
While filming in New York last summer, the urban set of the highly anticipated sequel (in theaters May 1) was swarmed by fans and paparazzi alike, all of whom wanted to catch a glimpse of stars Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt in enviable Lanvin coats and Dior corset suits.
But no look took our breath away quite like Anne Hathaway's Gabriela Hearst maxi dress, taken from the designer's spring 2025 collection. The prismatic frock was paired with a Shebobo Kate bucket hat, along with Bulgari sunglasses, Chloé platform sandals and a Fendi bag.

Hathaway's character, Andy Sachs, wears the traffic-stopping garment in an early scene of the new movie, which picks up roughly 20 years after the Oscar-nominated 2006 film. Since leaving Runway magazine, Andy's personal style has largely taken a backseat as she's climbed the ranks as an intrepid investigative journalist.
But when she's laid off from her newspaper job, Andy returns to Runway as a features editor and helps the magazine land a once-unthinkable exclusive interview.
To celebrate, she's invited to a star-studded soiree in the Hamptons, hosted at a seaside abode just outside the city. And with the help of longtime Runway fixture Nigel (Stanley Tucci), she decides to reup her fashion game in an eye-popping colorblock dress that she picks from the magazine's bountiful closet.

"There were healthy debates about what should be worn in that scene of going to the Hamptons," says costume designer Molly Rogers, stepping in for Patricia Field for the sequel. "There were quite a few opinions, but I kept pitching that mosaic maxi. It has a stained-glass vibe to it.
"It felt like 'The Wizard of Oz,' when it goes from black and white to color," Rogers continues. "This was a reporter who had been in neutrals. And then she got access to the closet with Nigel, and she's suddenly back in this Technicolor world of fashion. It's colorful, it's dangerous, it's exciting – to me, it's Andy making a statement."
