Don't get too high on the 'Scary Movie' popcorn bucket. It's not real

Updated May 22, 2026, 2:55 p.m. ET

Fans had high hopes for a certain "Scary Movie" popcorn bucket. It just went up in smoke.

More than two decades after the Wayans brothers released their last installment of the iconic horror-parody film series, the writer-actor-producers are returning on June 5 with a reunited original cast for a spiritual successor to the first two films.

Buzz around one post to the film's official social media account ended up being a buzzkill for fans hoping to enhance their moviegoing experience, however.

Captioned "ya'll weren't ready," the Instagram video and an accompanying static post shared on May 21 appear to promote a set of rather ... unique popcorn buckets. No, it's not a visage of Ghostface's head. It's a bong. Just a bong – complete with a "bowl" filled with butter.

'Scary Movie' 6 bong popcorn buckets not for sale in theaters

If you've seen the films, you probably get the joke. The original cast of characters, specifically one played by Marlon Wayans himself, aren't exactly shy about their fondness for a certain type of greenery, and subsequent franchise imagery, advertising and merch have often featured references to weed in some way. In fact, the film has already partnered with Pax, a brand that makes vaping devices for use with marijuana products, on an official collaboration to promote the sixth installment.

But a clear, full-sized, potentially fully functional bong stuffed to the brim with snacks seems to blur the line between popcorn and paraphernalia a little too much for movie theaters. And while director Michael Tiddes commented on Instagram reassuring fans the bong-bucket, which comes in four sizes, "is real," it seems it at least won't be available in-house to theatergoers.

"The popcorn buckets were created for promotional purposes and are not for sale," Paramount told USA TODAY in an emailed statement on Friday, May 22.

AMC Theatres likewise told USA TODAY on May 22 that it has no plans to release such popcorn buckets. Other theaters that will show the film, including Regal, Alamo Drafthouse, Showcase and Cinemark, did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for confirmation.

Social media had high hopes

Rumors about the buckets have already taken off online, however, with social media posts showing the bongs garnering thousands of excited comments and arguments as to their validity.

"Finally, a multipurpose popcorn bucket!" said one well-liked comment beneath the official Instagram post. "First popcorn bucket I’ll have to fight to get," agreed another. Many comments asked if the item was real, with some even saying they had called their local theaters to check, without much luck.

Some have speculated that the items may be part of a limited, online novelty collection that could go on sale at a later date, but Paramount did not confirm any such details.
