Leo Dan, Argentine singer and songwriter of romantic hits, dies at 82

Legendary Argentine singer and composer Leo Dan has died. He was 82.

News of his death was shared on his social media accounts Wednesday.

"This morning our beloved Leo Dan left his body in peace and with the love of his family," read the statement on Instagram, originally written in Spanish. "Thus, he returned to the pure light of his Heavenly Father, to guide us and take care of us from infinity. Today, January 1, 2025, we invite everyone who was part of his story and who were touched by his legacy, to celebrate his love, his music and his life. With great peace in our hearts, we remember and feel his deep love… forever."

The post, featuring a photo of Dan singing or speaking into a microphone, ended with the bible verse John 11:25: "Then Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he die, yet shall he live."

Born Leopoldo Dante Tévez, the singer recorded over 20 albums during his lifetime. His greatest hits about romance and longing have endured throughout Latin America, including the songs "Celia," "How I Miss You, My Love" ("Cómo Te Extraño Mi Amor") and "Ask Me for the Moon" ("Pídeme la Luna"), through a career that spanned decades since his start in 1963.

During his brief stint as an actor, he starred in the Argentine musical comedy "¡Cómo te Extraño…!" in 1966 and the musical drama "La Novela de un Joven Pobre" in 1968.

In 2012, he received the Latin Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2018, his track "Te he Prometido" or "I Promised You" was featured prominently in the Oscar-winning film "Roma."

Dan was scheduled for 2025 performances in the United States. Two "El Adios De Una Leyenda," or "The Goodbye of a Legend," shows were scheduled in Arizona and at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas this February.
