Demi Lovato is back in the studio – and she's offering a sultry new song for the summer.

On "Fast," Lovato's new single out Aug. 1, the celebrated vocalist opts for a more electronic sound, blending sensual lyrics with a hot-and-heavy synth. Up-tempo keyboards and a suspenseful beat drop make for a new experience of Lovato's soaring vibrato, perhaps providing a hint to the genre of the larger album expected to follow the single's release.

"I wanna go fast / I wanna go hard / I wanna go anywhere, anywhere you are," she croons, leaning into a dance-pop sound different from the rock and soul-inspired projects she's dropped more recently.

"Fast" marks her first new music since 2023's "Revamped," which remixed many of the songs from her early pop days to have a more rock n' roll sound. "Holy Fv--," the singer's most recent original album, released in 2022, was a pure rock project.

Now, Lovato is teaming up with Zhone, a Grammy-nominated writer and producer, who has helped engineer the sound of recent Charli XCX and Kesha projects. The partnership may signal a return to her pop roots.

In 2022, Lovato seemed to hint at the end of her long-time tie with the genre, posting on her Instagram at the time: "A funeral for my pop music," alongside a photo of her holding up a middle finger.

But she's back now with a dancier beat – and a literal resurrection of the genre. "Fast" echoes the feel of "Cool for the Summer," another anthem for the hotter months with a synth-pop feel, which Lovato released a little over a decade ago.

Demi Lovato speaks onstage during Teen Vogue Summit 2024 at Nya Studios on Nov. 23, 2024, in Los Angeles.

"It's been so inspiring working with Demi and experiencing her journey of continued leveling up," Zhone told Rolling Stone in a July 21 interview. "She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music! It really comes across throughout."
