NYC mayor jokes about Taylor Swift wedding, urges fans to beat heat
Bryan WestAs New York City braces for a week of cruel summer temperatures that could push temperatures to 100 degrees, Mayor Zohran Mamdani isn't sweating reports that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce plan to marry at Madison Square Garden.
"My recommendation to all New Yorkers is to stay inside and stay cool," Mamdani said during a June 30 news conference when asked about the rumored wedding and whether fans should expect street closures. "And if you happen to be getting married at Madison Square Garden, you will be staying inside and you will be staying cool."
The mayor quickly pivoted from the celebrity question into a public service announcement, urging residents to take the extreme heat seriously by drinking water, wearing sunscreen and finding air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
"This is a time to try and stay indoors as much as you can," he said. "Stay quenched."
Neither Swift nor Kelce has confirmed their wedding date or venue. Still, signs of activity continue to build around Madison Square Garden.
Production trucks have been arriving outside the arena since Monday, June 29, with crews loading equipment in and out of the venue. On Tuesday, June 30, workers briefly rolled out a carpet across one of the Garden's entrance staircases before removing it minutes later, as preparations continued outside the arena. USA TODAY has also confirmed permits related to Madison Square Garden were filed for July 2 through July 4, though the records do not identify Swift or Kelce or specify the nature of the event.
The rumored celebration would coincide with one of the busiest weekends New York City has faced in years, as officials prepare for FIFA World Cup matches, Sail250 festivities marking America's 250th anniversary and Fourth of July celebrations.
Forecasters expect the hottest days of the week to arrive just as the reported wedding festivities begin, with temperatures forecast to reach 100 degrees on July 2 and July 3 before thunderstorms move into the area over the holiday weekend.
