Government Shutdown

The longest government shutdown ever is over. See how your senators voted

Oct. 14, 2025Updated Nov. 12, 2025, 10:29 p.m. ET

America's record-breaking government shutdown is finally over after 43 days.

The House of Representatives voted to end the longest continuous shutdown in U.S. history on the evening of Nov. 12, sending the measure to the desk of President Donald Trump, who is signed the bill into law shortly before 10:30 p.m. local time.

The vote follows a major break in the impasse — eight Senators stepped across party lines on Nov. 10 and passed a funding package, placing the government on a path to reopen.

Why did the government shut down?

Lawmakers were deadlocked over healthcare funding and tax credits for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, that expire at the end of the year. Democratic lawmakers wanted the subsidies to be extended before enrollment began on Nov. 1. Democrats also wanted written assurances that the White House will not try to unilaterally cancel spending agreed to in any deal, according to Reuters.
