Aldi's limited edition Big Bag sold out within minutes. Will it restock?

Aldi is giving "those viral mini totes" a run for their money with its new "biggest shopping tote yet."

The Germany-based discount grocery chain released the Aldi Big Bag, which is larger than a carry-on and about the size of an aquarium at 5.5 square feet, for free on Sept. 16, and it has already sold out online.

Aldi told USA TODAY in a statement that all 1,000 bags, available online only on a first-come, first-served basis at ALDIBigBag.com, sold out in less than 20 minutes.

"We knew Aldi fans were devoted but (we) were blown away that they snagged all 1,000 bags in just 13 minutes," Aldi's statement said. "We had thousands of fans try to claim a bag the moment they dropped, showing just how much people value what Aldi delivers."

Only 1,000 of the reusable big bags were available starting at 9 a.m. CT on Sept. 16, according to a news release.

The discount supermarket chain added: "And we’re only getting started – we’ll keep finding bold ways to show shoppers the power of choosing Aldi."

Will Aldi's Big Bag be restocked?

For now, a national restock is not planned, "but given how many people wanted one, you never know if the Aldi Big Bags might come back in the future," the supermarket chain said.

The retailer, on its website, meanwhile, says not to worry.

"No matter what bag you bring, you can still get everyday low prices on all the essentials at aldi.us," according to the site.

According to Aldi, the new bags are a "metaphor for massive savings … because bigger savings mean bigger hauls, and bigger hauls mean you need a bigger bag."

"Aldi is going BIG … literally," the retailer said in a news release. "Those viral mini totes? Cute, but they could never."

Trader Joe's mini canvas tote bags

With its latest drop, Aldi was seemingly taking a dig at Trader Joe's mini tote bags, which went viral last year and have since developed a cult status.

The mini totes became so popular that customers waited in lengthy lines to get their hands on them. Viral videos on TikTok showed frenzies and long lines at stores, where employees were often forced to limit the number of bags customers could purchase.

The "mini canvas tote bags certainly sold more quickly than we anticipated," Trader Joe's representative Nakia Rohde told USA TODAY in March 2024. "Before we had the opportunity to promote them in any way, customers across the country found them at their neighborhood Trader Joe’s."

Since then, Trader Joe's has released multiple iterations of the mini totes, including a pastel-themed lineup for Easter. A new fall-themed collection is also reported to drop soon.
