Plant-based butter recalled over yeast, mold, E. coli concerns
More than 1,300 cases of Miyoko's Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter have been recalled over potential yeast, mold, and E. coli contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Prosperity Organic Foods, Inc., the Boise, Idaho-based maker of the plant-based butter, initiated the recall on Sept. 11, according to the FDA's enforcement report. The agency classified it as Class II on Oct. 23, meaning exposure to the product could cause "temporary or medically reversible" health effects, while the probability of serious harm is considered remote.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.
The affected vegan butter was distributed to grocery stores in 10 states, including New Hampshire, the FDA said. Consumers who purchased the product should not eat it and should return it to the store for a full refund.
In response to a comment on its Facebook page, Miyoko's Creamery said the recall was limited to a specific lot of the product.
"We voluntarily recalled a specific lot of European Style Salted Butter after testing identified a potential food-safety concern," the company wrote. "The action is limited to the identified product and lot, and we worked with our retail partners and regulatory authorities to remove affected product."
The salted butter is the company's "best-selling, most-awarded product," and is made from organic cashew milk, according to the Miyoko's Creamery website.
"We know how much people care about Miyoko's and these products," the company continued. "We're committed to earning that trust through transparency, product quality and what we put on shelves every day."
