Walmart to remodel 650 stores, open 20 new locations this year

Walmart has announced plans to open 20 new stores this year and remodel hundreds of existing locations.

The retail giant said it is planning to revamp more than 650 stores across the country. The 20 new stores will open later this year or early in 2027, Walmart said in an April 16 news release.

The Arkansas-based retailer said the renovations and expansions are "intended to create jobs, help strengthen local economies, and make shopping faster and more convenient for our customers."

In 2024, Walmart had announced plans to open more than 100 new stores through 2029.

The latest announcement of new locations and remodels also comes after Walmart revealed a redesign of the company's Great Value private-label brand.

Where is Walmart opening new stores?

Walmart has not yet revealed a full list of locations where it plans to open stores. USA TODAY has reached out to the company for more information.

The retailer did note that is has already opened several new stores this year, including: 

• Walmart Supercenters in Eastvale, California, and Apollo Beach, Jacksonville and The Villages, Florida
• Walmart Neighborhood Market in Ocala, Florida

Later this year, Walmart said it will open a new supercenter in Celina, Texas, and expand the supercenter in Tucson, Arizona.

The major retailer also said it opened nine new stores last year, including locations in Alabama, California, Florida, New Jersey, Texas and Utah.

How is Walmart remodeling stores?

As for the stores undergoing remodels, Walmart said the renovations may include the following changes: 

• Wider aisles and updated layouts
• New and expanded displays and assortments
• Expanded pickup and delivery services, including express delivery options
• Updated vision centers and pharmacies with private consultation rooms
• New digital touchpoints
• Refreshed interiors and exteriors with modern signage, improved parking and landscaping
