It's about that time to give special recognition to the mothers — or the madres — in our lives.

The month of May includes Mother’s Day celebrations in both the United States and Mexico, and while each country typically observes it on a different date, this year they fall on the same day.

Mother's Day in America dates back to 1887 in Kentucky, when teacher Mary Towles Sasseen led her class in what is the first known observance of Mother’s Day, focusing solely on honoring mothers, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

When is Mexican Mother's Day or 'Día de las Madres'?

Every year, 'Día de las Madres' is celebrated on May 10 in Mexico. This year, it falls on a Sunday — the same day as Mother's Day in the United States.

Mexican Mother's Day origin

The first Mexican Mother’s Day dates back to 1922, when Rafael Alducin, a journalist and founder of the newspaper Excelsior, issued a national invitation to choose a special date to honor Mexican mothers, according to the Yucatan Times.

When is American Mother's Day 2026?

Mother's Day is celebrated on Sunday, May 10.
