It took a village to pull off this surprise for a breast cancer survivor
After one of the hardest years of her life, a breast cancer survivor received a powerful surprise.
Miranda Basden's friends are always up to something, whether it's a themed party or a fun outing. So when Bralyn and Erica, along with her daughter Miriah, told her to wear pink for a surprise, it felt like no big deal.
"I'm thinking we're going to go to lunch or something like that because it's been a while since we've been out," Basden said.
Seven months earlier, Basden completed treatment for breast cancer. It had been a difficult year filled with surgery and radiation. Now in remission, she was ready to spend time with the people she loved.
On the drive to the meetup in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Basden's friends told her to change out of her heels and into her tennis shoes. Then they pulled over near Erica's neighborhood and asked her to get out of the car and start walking.
"We just started walking and I'm like, 'What are we doing? Where are we going?' And so we're just walking, walking. And then she asked me if I see anybody," Basden said.
Across the street, Basden spotted a few friends dressed in pink and holding signs. They began cheering, "We have a survivor!"
Thinking that was the surprise, Basden became emotional. But it was just the beginning.
"We started walking some more," Basden said. "And then another set of friends came out and hugged me and celebrated with me, and then we started walking some more."
Basden soon realized that for the past three months, her friends had organized a survivor walk. At every stop along the mile-long journey, more than 35 friends and family members from different chapters of her life joined the growing entourage. Even her massage therapist was there.
"I was shocked, surprised, and in disbelief," Basden said.
Then they arrived at the final destination: Erica's house.
When Basden opened the door, she was met with a room filled with pink balloons, photos, decorations and food. She burst into tears.
"I can't explain the feeling because I felt so many emotions at once. I was overwhelmed with love, joy, support, and I felt seen," Basden said.
After an opening prayer, Basden's friends and family began sharing speeches. The tributes were emotional, but when it was her mother-in-law's turn to speak, there wasn't a dry eye in the room.
"Miranda is amazing. She's the glue for our family. We all stand on her shoulders. I have no idea how she keeps it all together," she said. "I'm so eternally grateful for every moment that she has. I'm so glad that she is blessed and highly favored. She is a gift."
She went on, "You are so deserving of all the best life has to offer, and I'm so blessed that you were chosen to be the mother of my grandchildren and to be the love of my son's life."
In the end, Basden's friends organized the surprise to deliver a single message.
"It was important to my friends and family that I knew they were there for me and they were thinking of me during my entire journey," Basden said. "Some were more present than others, but they wanted me to know that I never walk alone."
