Margot Robbie is going to star in a live-action Barbie movie

Updated Jan. 8, 2019, 1:34 p.m. ET

Margot Robbie has some big, hot pink shoes to fill.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Mattel announced Tuesday they would join forces for the first live-action Barbie flick, with the Australian-born Oscar nominee in the starring role.

“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery," Robbie, 28, said in a statement to USA TODAY. "Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide."

A release date has not yet been announced.

Back in 2016, Amy Schumer was in talks to play Barbie but she dropped out due to a scheduling conflict. The movie was originally slated to follow Barbie on a journey of self-discovery as she learns to embrace her imperfections.

"The film has so much promise and Sony and Mattel have been great partners," Schumer said in a statement to Variety in March 2017. "I'm bummed, but looking forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen."
