Prince's death, Day 23: His teenage great-niece might be an heir

Prince's star at the First Avenue club where he started his career in Minneapolis.

Here's the latest on the investigation into the singer's death, his estate and tributes.

5:30 p.m. ET: A Minnesota lawyer who once represented Prince's deceased half-brother has asked the probate court to appoint a guardian to represent the interests of a teen-aged great-niece of Prince as a potential heir to his multi-million estate.

It's yet another twist in the increasingly tangled picture of who is and is not a potential heir to the late superstar. This particular claim derives from Duane Nelson Sr., Prince's half-brother through his father; Duane Sr. died in 2011.

But he and his heirs are notably left out of Tyka Nelson's list of potential heirs, which includes herself and five other half-siblings.

"It is strange (Tyka Nelson) has not listed Senior as a potential heir," wrote Duane Nelson's former lawyer, Michael Padden.

Padden says Duane once worked for Prince as security but was fired in the mid-1990s and the brothers grew estranged. Duane's son, Duane Jr., also died, but left a 13-year-old daughter, whom Padden identifies as V.N. in a letter he wrote to probate Judge Kevin Eide and filed Friday.

Padden says in the letter that he has unsuccessfully tried to reach the girl's mother and grandmother to alert them to the fact the child might be a legitimate heir to Prince.

"Under the circumstances, and considering the sensitive time nature of this matter, in the event that the minor's mother does not secure counsel for the minor V.N. in the next week or so, I respectfully request that a guardian ad litem be appointed by the State," Padden wrote.

Padden surfaced early in the Prince case after he told investigators and reporters that Duane Nelson and Lorna Nelson, also a half-sibling to Prince who is now dead, had told him more than 10 years ago that Prince had “substantial” drug problems with the opioid painkiller Percocet and cocaine.

The claim was viewed as significant because investigators are exploring whether prescription painkillers played a role in Prince's death and federal drug agents have joined the inquiry.

Prince's death, Day 8: Overdose investigation

3:30 p.m. ET: Tyka Nelson hinted Friday that an official family "Memorial/Funeral/Tribute" to her brother might come by end of summer.

"Update: The proposed plan is to have our Memorial/Funeral/Tribute in August more updates soon..." she wrote at the end of a long post on her Facebook page.

In it, she said that neither she nor Prince's remains would be at a planned Sunday memorial service at Prince's Jehovah's Witnesses church. She also mocked media reports that she and her siblings are fighting over his estate. And she denied that an earlier intimate service for Prince shortly after his death was a funeral.

"U know I only come on here when I have sumthin' ta say...So Let me make myself VERY CLEAR! (Neither) I nor my brother's remains will be present at any Memorial or Funeral services, until the families Memorial/Funeral/Tribute," she opened.

"Please Don't misunderstand...The grief process is a unique experience to each individual and Therefore I support any and all Memorials or Funerals that have happened and/or are being planned...However I will Not be in attendance, because I feel that once…is enough."

Prince's sister, Tyka Nelson, left, greeted fans during a Prince Block Party April 30, 2016, in Minneapolis.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported Friday that a private, invitation-only memorial with up to 500 guests is planned Sunday for Prince at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Minnetonka, where the late superstar regularly attended Sunday services when he was in town.

It's one of several Prince tribute/memorial services that have taken place or are planned, including an intimate, invitation-only celebrity-studded event Wednesday night in Beverly Hills organized by Prince's two ex-wives.

And there was a brief service two days after his April 21 death at Paisley Park. Nelson said she planned a funeral for her "Very Private" brother on April 23 but it was aborted after word leaked out the night before, she wrote.

Five nagging questions about Prince's death

"With the help of the Paisley Park staff (because some friends had already flown into town) we held an intimate gathering due to that cancellation, however it was Not a Funeral," she stressed.

Then she addressed the "reports floating around" about alleged fighting between Nelson and Prince's half-siblings over his estate, as tabloid news sites such as TMZ have reported.

"To my knowledge…No One in my family has fought about anything, and least of all me…but I must admit I think it's funny that I’m the one they say, 'Stormed out...' or that 'We are at war.' Me? Us? Really? Where was I when all that happened?” she wrote.

She quoted Matthew 12:25 that a household divided against itself cannot stand.

"So Please don’t believe everything u read or get it twisted...We will…“Let Patience Have Its Perfect Work,” she wrote.

Then she re-posted an earlier statement released by Prince's family declaring that, "contrary to previous and current reports, there has been no memorial, funeral or tribute service for Prince that was organized or authorized by the family or Paisley Park representatives."

Prince's death, Day 22: Friends celebrate him at private memorial

Thursday recap: Three weeks after Prince's death and his autopsy, the report on his cause of death is still pending. Carver County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jason Kamerud, who is leading the investigation, told USA TODAY it may not be ready even by the end of next week.

Investigators, joined by federal drug agents, are exploring whether prescription painkillers played a role in his death and, if so, who prescribed the medications to him.

Director Spike Lee, who attended the Beverly Hills tribute event for Prince, also announced on social media that he plans his own tribute event June 4 in Brooklyn.
