Casey Wilson says I do to TV -- again

NEW YORK — In real life, Casey Wilson is quite happily hitched to comedy writer David Caspe.

They first met when she auditioned for his series Happy Endings. She got the job on the show, which ran until 2013. And now, in a further test of whether business and pleasure really can be mixed with positive results, the two are collaborating on NBC's Marry Me (Tuesday, 9 p.m. ET), about one couple's trip to the altar. She's the star, he's the scribe.

"We're not this weird couple that works together," says Wilson, 33. "We want to do the best we can while we have this opportunity. We do what we love every single day."

Still, says Wilson, "the show is loosely based on our relationship. But we now have 14 writers who all have weird relationships of their own."

Caspe didn't make his wife audition. The part was offered to her. Maybe she was just perfect for the relationship comedy, based a teeny bit on her real life. "David likes to make fun of me a lot. I'm very emotional, very passionate. I'm a Scorpio. He's very even," says Wilson. "I have anger issues. I'm very sensitive."

The characters she and Ken Marino play are loosely based on Wilson and Caspe. "Those archetypes are jumping-off points," she says, although some of their real-life situations make it to the writers room. "I tried to make him do this open-eyed cuddle that I learned in acting class that you do for five minutes."

She and Caspe don't have kids yet, but "we're getting there," says Wilson, a development that might also translate its way to the show.

We sat down with Wilson — a Saturday Night Live alum who left the show after two seasons and turns as Rachael Ray, Elizabeth Dole, Elizabeth Taylor, Katy Perry, and Jennifer Aniston and says, in retrospect, that there's no hard feelings and it just was not a good fit — over lunch at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant to discuss what it takes to make sure your I dos don't quickly spiral into I don'ts.

Wilson's advice:

DO try to spend time together on the weekends, and not with iPads.

DON'T ever start a fight when you're low on blood sugar because you will go into a black rage. You will see red.

DO have sex in front of everyone on set because it builds morale. No. Don't do that. I am kidding.

DON'T make out on set.

DO be professional. It's a workplace. We're not fighting. David is a very fair and collaborative guy.

DON'T hold grudges. At our (real) wedding, I was basically roasted. My best friend, maid of honor and writing partner finally stood up and said something nice, that I'm a good person who's kind to animals.

DO have some space. I write with my best friend.

DON'T get too hung up on the long hours when you're working this hard. I get to see him an hour a day.

DO be thankful. We always see to each other, we drive by and there's a poster up of it. We're so grateful it's on at all.
