You don’t need an excuse to enjoy a margarita. The slightly tart and sometimes spicy beverage pairs well with sunny days, cozy patios, good company and a side of chips, guacamole and homemade birria tacos. Plus, they are just as delicious when made with zero-proof tequilas as they are made the traditional way.

If you have a hankering for the refreshing beverage but find you’re out of margarita mix, there’s an easy way to remedy that without leaving your house. All you need is water, sugar and your preference of citrus. So, get out your most festive cups and prepare to enjoy!

Watch this video to see how to make your own margarita mix.

DIY margarita mix

Making your own allows you to control the sweetness or tartness of the mix, so adjust the recipe to suit your palate. Here’s a good place to start:

  1. Make a simple syrup by combining equal parts water and sugar in a pot on the stove. Bring it to a light simmer to dissolve the sugar.
  2. Add in lemon, lime and orange peels to enhance the flavor.
  3. Let the peels infuse for a few minutes before turning off the heat and letting everything steep.
  4. While the simple syrup is cooling, juice the partially peeled citrus into a separate container. You can choose to stick with just lime or use a combination of lemons, limes and oranges.
  5. Once the simple syrup has cooled, combine it with the citrus juice and mix.

Now the mix is ready to pair with your favorite regular or zero-proof tequila. All that’s left to do is decide what you want on the rim: salt, sugar or tajín!

Easy homemade guacamole recipe

There’s something almost euphoric about the combination of a margarita and a side of guacamole. It's a restaurant favorite, but it’s quite easy to make at home, as long as the avocados are ripe.

Check the avocados the day before you plan to make the dip. If they are still too firm, put them in a paper bag with an apple or banana. Fold the edges and let the bag sit overnight. You should notice a difference by the next day.

If the avocados are soft and teetering on the edge of being too soft, keep them away from other produce.

When you’re ready to make guacamole:

Start by making a pico de gallo with onions, tomato, jalapeños and cilantro. This lasts in the fridge for a few days and is a tasty dip on its own, too!

Guacamole is best when it’s fresh, so make it in smaller batches.

  1. Scoop the avocado into a bowl and give it a quick mash.
  2. Add in some of the pico de gallo.
  3. Add salt.
  4. Add lime juice
  5. Mix it up and enjoy!

All of this is to taste, so adjust any of the amounts to fit your taste.
