It doesn’t matter whether you’re making a burger for one or a platter of burgers for a crowd, there’s a reason it’s considered a comfort food. With the number of toppings you can pile on the burger and sides you can serve alongside it, there's a burger for every mood.
However, the journey from plate to mouth can be a messy one once all the toppings and condiments are piled atop the patty. Fortunately, giving it a quick wrap can significantly reduce the risk of a burger blowout.

How to assemble the perfect burger
Just because they’re called “toppings” doesn't mean they are required to go on top of the burger! Layering the burger efficiently can make a world of difference when it comes to preventing things from slipping out. The key is stacking it in a way that protects dry ingredients from the wet ones and uses condiments as glue.
The best place to start is with the buns! Untoasted buns are like sponges and quickly get soggy, so toast them to give your burger a solid foundation.
Next, spread mayonnaise, ketchup or your favorite condiment on the bun. This helps it act like a glue for some of the toppings.
Place the lettuce on the condiments and top it with tomato. The lettuce acts as a nest for the tomato slice and protects the bun from juices.
Pro tip: Salt the tomatoes before you add them to the burger to enhance the flavor.
Place the burger patty on the tomato. If your perfect burger includes bacon and cheese, sandwich the strips between the patty and cheese. The cheese acts as a weighted blanket and secures the bacon onto the burger.
Add the pickles to the other side of the melted cheese.
Pro tip: Put the pickles on a paper towel to soak up the juices before adding them to your burger.
Add onions and any other toppings you like and round it all off by adding another layer of your favorite condiment to the top bun to act as glue for the other bun.

How to wrap a burger
The burger is assembled, but don’t take a bite yet! The beefy stack, layered with toppings and condiments, can get messy. Before digging in, wrap it restaurant style to keep everything contained and catch any drips.
To wrap a burger:
- Fold wax paper or parchment paper into a large triangle.
- Place one of the straight edges of the triangle over half of the topside of the burger. Align the paper so the burger is about half way between the edges.
- Pick up the burger and wrap the paper around the sides and bottom of the burger.
- Turn the burger over and roll the corners in.
- Flip the remaining flap up and tuck the edge between the burger and the paper.
You can also use this wrapping method on chicken sandwiches and non-meat burgers.
