Is H&M closing stores? Here’s what to know

Nov. 25, 2025, 8:22 p.m. ET

Clothing giant H&M is set to close two stores in New York City by January 2026 as part of a plan to close 200 stores during 2025.

H&M filed the planned closures with the New York Department of Labor. In the company’s filing, 62 employees at the store are set to be laid off, with 31 affected at two Manhattan locations.

The two closures are set to occur by Jan. 19, 2026, according to the filing. Earlier this year, H&M quietly announced in its six-month report that it would close hundreds of stores in 2025.

“Just over 200 stores are scheduled for closure during 2025, mainly in established markets,” H&M said.

According to Reuters, H&M’s global footprint has sharply declined since the pandemic, with a 19% reduction in locations from its peak at the end of 2019.

Where is H&M closing stores?

According to the New York Department of Labor, the following H&M stores are set to close by next January.

  • 18 Church St., New York, New York
  • 150 East 86th St., New York, New York

In a statement to USA TODAY, H&M said the closures are a part of a long-term growth strategy.

“While physical stores will always remain important to us and something we continue to invest in, having the right stores in the right locations is vital to ensure our long-term and sustainable growth,” H&M said. “We are following our normal procedure of working with any affected store employees to place them in any available roles in neighboring stores.”
