Mazda updates interior, electronics on key CX-5 SUV

A day after previewing its all-new smaller CX-3 SUV, Mazda today showed off the midcycle refresh of its key CX-5 two-row utility.

The SUV is a core product for Mazda -- its No. 2-seller this year after the Mazda3 compact sedan, and its fastest-growing model, with sales up 26.6% year-to-date.

Mazda didn't mess with what was working outside, with only a light refresh to the grille and fascias.

The attention and money went to the interior, where the dash is simpler and sleeker and the console is more substantial. There are better materials and more cubbies for storage.

And, importantly, CX-5 gets Mazda's latest-generation infotainment and connectivity -- Mazda Connect -- with a bigger screen standing up high -- updating a significant weakness vs. rivals in the current model.

Mazda says it also has tweaked the suspension for better ride and added more sound deadening.

The powertrains carry, with a slight increase in the already good-for-the-class fuel economy for the 2.5-liter engine.

Updated driver assist options include adaptive cruise control, collision braking, and blind spot and cross-traffic alerts.
