First look: BMW creates whole new SUV line with X2
Chris Woodyard
Just when you thought the world has enough compact SUV models, BMW has come along with a whole new line -- the X2.

Unveiled this week, X2 becomes BMW's third small luxury SUV, sandwiched into the lineup -- at least based on its designation -- between the subcompact X1 and compact X3.
X2, however, is designed to stand distinct from the others when it comes to style and size. It's 3.2 inches shorter than the X1 and 2.8 inches lower, intended to make it look more sporty and edgy.
The new little SUV will be recognizable by its coupe-like roofline -- meaning it will appear less boxy -- and narrower rear windows.
When X2 arrives next spring, it will be powered by a 2-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 228 horsepower and is good for a zero-to-60 mile-per-hour time of 6.3 seconds. The engine is coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
