We tried the Popeyes x One Piece meal. Here's what we think

Popeyes' latest collaboration with Toei Animation brought "One Piece" fans a meal inspired by the beloved characters of the iconic manga and anime.

On Monday, April 13, Popeyes unveiled a menu that will allow fans to chow down like the future King of the Pirates, as participating Popeyes restaurants across the United States and Canada introduce the Popeyes x One Piece menu for a limited time, according to a news release.

The menu features an option that includes an entree, a drink and even a dessert inspired by Tony Tony Chopper.

We tried the menu items, and here's our assessment after doing a taste test.

What do the Popeyes x One Piece menu items taste like?

USA TODAY tried the "One Piece"-inspired options, which included two pieces of Popeyes signature chicken, mac and cheese, which we swapped out for mashed potatoes, a berry-flavored lemonade inspired by Monkey D. Luffy's devil fruit and a strawberry-flavored cupcake inspired by Tony Tony Chopper.

The Gum-Gum Fruit lemonade was tangy and had a lot of syrup. Customers can choose to get their lemonade frozen or iced.

The Chopper Cupcake tasted like Nesquick strawberry milk, and might be too sugary to finish in one sitting. But it's definitely the kind of cupcake Tony Tony Chopper would love.

• Luffy Bento Box, $7.99- Includes two pieces of Popeyes Signature Chicken and mac and cheese.
• Gum-Gum Fruit Lemonade, $3.49- A lemonade inspired by the fictional "Gum-Gum Fruit," the Devil Fruit that gave Captain Monkey D. Luffy his powers.
• Chopper’s Cupcake, $3.99- A pink cake with pink frosting named after the Straw Hat crew's doctor, Tony Tony Chopper.
• Luffy Bento Bundle, $13.99- The bundle includes pieces of Popeyes Signature Chicken, mac and cheese, a Gum-Gum Fruit lemonade and Chopper’s Cupcake

Fans can also get Popeyes x One Piece merch

On Wednesday, April 15, Popeyes will also release exclusive Popeyes x One Piece merchandise, which includes keychains, T-shirts and Bento Boxes, according to the news release. The merchandise will be available for purchase online at shop.popeyes.com.

What is 'One Piece'?

"One Piece" is a Japanese comic book, also known as a manga, created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997. Since its publication, it has been translated into multiple languages, including English. A Japanese animated show (anime), the Netflix live-action show, and multiple movies have also been created based on the manga.

On Tuesday, March 3, Crunchyroll announced that the "One Piece" comic has sold over 600 million copies, surpassing Superman and becoming the best-selling comic book of all time.

Oda is the eighth best-selling author of all time, and sits behind J. K. Rowling, who sold 600 to 650 million copies of the Harry Potter novels, according to Crunchyroll. Oda is also the only Japanese author and the second non-English-language author listed in the top 10.
