New illnesses reported in salmonella outbreak linked to 'super greens'
Mary Walrath-HoldridgeAn investigation into a salmonella outbreak that was previously declared "over" has been reopened by federal authorities after infections linked to superfood supplements continued to crop up in states across the country.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control previously closed an investigation into products containing imported moringa leaf powder after 97 people from 32 states became sick with salmonella poisoning, resulting in 26 hospitalizations.
An additional 22 illnesses in four new states were reported to the agencies since the case closed on March 17, prompting a fresh warning. As of May 27, the reopened investigation found a total of 119 people had become sick across 36 states, causing 32 hospitalizations.
Recalls began on Jan. 15, when brand Live it Up voluntarily recalled its products "out of an abundance of caution" after investigators traced outbreaks to its supplements. Why Not Natural, another supplement brand, later added one of its products to the list in a Jan. 28 recall.
In the latest update, brands TNVitamins and Doctor’s Pride, both manufactured by Deer Park, New York-based Total Nutrition Inc., were also added to the list of affected products. The supplements have long shelf lives, so federal health authorities are encouraging consumers to check their homes, even if they haven't purchased the products recently.
Exposure to salmonella can be especially dangerous for vulnerable groups, including children, older adults and those with compromised immune systems.
Here's what to know about the outbreak.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning usually start six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria. The most common symptoms are diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, according to the CDC.
While most healthy people can recover in four to seven days without treatment, some vulnerable people, such as children under 5, adults 65 and older and those with weakened immune systems, may experience more severe illness that requires medical treatment or hospitalization.
If you display any of these more serious symptoms, the CDC advises contacting your healthcare professional:
- Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit
- Diarrhea for more than three days that is not improving
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomiting to the point that you cannot keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, such as not urinating much, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up
