Homemade pizza dough
Homemade pizza dough is cheap and easy to make. It takes about 10 minutes of prep time and at least 10 minutes of resting and proofing time in the refrigerator. You can also make it in the morning, let it rest in the fridge while you’re working, and it’ll be ready to roll when it’s time to make dinner.
To make pizza dough, you’ll need:
- 3 ½ cups of flour. Bread flour makes the dough crispier but it can also be made with all-purpose flour.
- 1 packet of yeast.
- 1 tsp sugar.
- 2 tsp salt.
- 1 ½ cups warm water.
- 2 tbsp. olive oil.
Combine the ingredients and mix on low speed using the dough hook attachment until well combined. If the dough looks dry, add a little more water. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour. Let the mixer run for about five minutes to help develop the gluten.
Next, lightly coat the dough in olive oil, cover it and place it in the refrigerator to proof.
Homemade pizza sauce
With the dough in the refrigerator, let’s get started on the sauce. Blend together one can of whole tomatoes or tomato sauce—whichever you prefer—along with garlic, tomato paste, salt, pepper, basil, oregano, Italian seasoning and any other flavors you enjoy.

Homemade pizza
The dough has risen, and the sauce would make any nonna proud. Now it’s time to assemble the pizza.
Roll the dough out on a pizza stone for a round pie or on an oiled baking sheet for a flatbread-style pizza. Or, if you’re feeling especially adventurous, do as the professionals do and give it a few rotating tosses in the air—just don’t toss it too high.
Once the dough is rolled out, you can start adding sauce and toppings immediately or give it a head start on the bake. To do that, place it in a scorching hot, 500ºF oven for about 10 minutes. Then, take it out and add your sauce and toppings.
