5 things you need to know Tuesday
1. France mobilizes 10,000 security forces to protect country
French police say that six terror-cell members may still be at large after the terrorism attacks at the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris last week. Security forces will be deployed beginning Tuesday at the country's most vulnerable locations, including Jewish schools, said Jean-Yves Le Drian, France's defense minister. Some 10,000 security forces are being mobilized to help in the effort and to protect the population against other possible attacks.
2. Few seats at the boardroom table for women
Across the globe, men dramatically outnumber women on the boards of public companies. In Japan, women hold 3.1% of board seats of TOPIX Core 30 index firms. In the United Kingdom, women hold 22.8% of board seats in FTSE 100 index companies. And in the U.S., women hold 19.2% of S&P 500 company board seats.The data are from a report released Tuesday by women's issues research group Catalyst. Catalyst teamed with data visualization software firm The Data Morphosis Group to examine the gender diversity on boards at stock market index companies.
3. Obama calls for new cyberprotections
This week, President Obama said lawmakers need to promote the benefits of Internet commerce while minimizing the risks of identity theft and other cybercrimes that can damage the economy. On Tuesday, in addition to a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House, Obama will visit the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center in Arlington, Va. He'll roll out a broadband proposal in Iowa on Wednesday and tout job opportunities in the cybersecurity field in Norfolk, Va., on Thursday. The speeches are the latest in a series Obama has been giving, previewing the State of the Union Address he will deliver Jan. 20.
4. LeBron says he's game-time decision for Cavs return
LeBron James returned to practice with the Cleveland Cavaliers but was non-committal about playing against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday at U.S. Airways Center. "I'm a game-time decision," he said. The Cavaliers have been without James, the four-time MVP, for two weeks. During that time, they've had to teach two new players — J.R. Smith, whom they got in a trade with the New York Knicks, and Timofey Mozgov, whom they got from Denver — the system without the No. 1 option.
5. Trial begins for alleged 'Silk Road' drug site owner
Jury selection begins in federal district court in Manhattan for Ross Ulbricht, the alleged owner of the Silk Road encrypted website where prosecutors say more than 100,000 customers purchased drugs and other unlawful items. Prosecutors also contend in court documents that Ulbricht asked others to kill people who posed a threat to his business. Ulbricht, who allegedly operated under the online name "Dread Pirate Roberts,'' has pleaded not guilty.
