See some of the areas most threatened by Hurricane Matthew's storm surge
Storm surges of up to 9 feet are expected in Florida from Hurricane Matthew.
Hurricane Matthew is expected to pack winds as strong as 145 mph as it churns toward Florida, but the storm surges of up to 9 feet may offer the biggest threat in the nearly sea-level state.

Merritt Island — home to the Kennedy Space Center — and several other locations in Brevard County are predicted to face some of the highest surges in the next few days.

Here's a closer look at the ominous forecast for Merritt Island.

The storm's exact track could vary slightly as well as the heights of the surge, but a large portion Florida's central coast looks in danger as Matthew locks into its final path. Palm Coast — just north of Daytona Beach — is also predicted to face significant surges.
