Eclipse 2017: What you need to know

The 2017 solar eclipse is almost upon us.

Here's what you need to know, whether it's where to pitch a tent, whether or not you can enjoy marijuana on your trip or where to find those eclipse glasses everybody keeps talking about. 

• Fort Collins isn't in the path of totality, but several locations within driving distance are. Whether you're headed to Casper, Wyoming, or another nearby Wyoming or Nebraska eclipse destination, be sure to plan ahead. We even made you a procrastinator's guide if you haven't made your plans yet. Of note: Weed is a no-no if you're traveling outside of Colorado to neighboring states, but some will punish you more than others if you violate marijuana laws.
• Traffic is going to be bad. Plan ahead, especially if you're traveling on Interstate 25, Interstate 76, U.S. Highway 287 or U.S. Highway 85 on your way to the path of totality.
• Even if you can't travel to the path of totality, you can still catch plenty of eclipse action right here in Northern Colorado. You'll see the moon obscure between 95 and 96 percent of the sun in Fort Collins.
• Don't forget to get your eclipse glasses or make a pinhole viewer to protect your eyes. Staring at the sun without protection (for any amount of time) can cause retinal damage. Note: If you got eclipse glasses at Wellington Public Library, do not use them. They have been recalled.
