What is Mamdani's approval rating? What the polls say about the mayor

April 10, 2026, 9:13 a.m. ET

Two new polls, the first of many that will measure Mayor Zohran Mamdani's approval rating during his tenure, have been released as he reaches his first 100 days in office.

The 34-year-old, who caused a major upset in the mayoral race last year by beating one of the biggest political dynasties in the city for the Democratic nomination, has had all eyes on his performance.

Here's the latest on Mamdani's polling, and if New Yorkers are happy with his work so far.

Mamdani approval rating

Zohran Mamdani received differing approval ratings from poll-to-poll.

Mamdani's overall approval rating sits at 48% in a recent poll by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, which surveyed 1,454 New York City adults in late March.

While 30% disapprove of his job so far, 23% are still unsure about where they stand with Mamdani as of now; a number the institute called "notable." The poll does note that Mamdani has a lower rating than former NYC Mayor Eric Adams did in his first 100 days, who had a 61% approval rating.

Another poll, held by Emerson College Polling/PIX11, showed that Mamdani had a 43% approval rating when 850 NYC registered voters were asked in early April.

Around 30% were neutral about his job so far, with 27% disapproving.

What do New Yorkers think of Mamdani so far?

In the Marist poll, a majority of New Yorkers do see Mamdani as a unifier: 61% said that he's doing more work to unite the city than divide it. And almost three quarters of those surveyed said that Mamdani was hard working in his new role.

"When compared with his predecessors at similar points in their administrations, Mamdani outperforms both Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio among registered voters in terms of effecting positive change in New York City," the poll said.

"He is also more likely than de Blasio to be perceived as working hard."

In the Emerson poll, 59% of New Yorkers said that Mamdani has been focusing on issues of importance to them.

But 59% also said that they believe NYC is on the wrong track.

"Majorities of Black (58%) and Hispanic (68%) New York City voters say the city is on the wrong track, while white voters are more divided, with 51% saying the city is headed in the right direction and 49% saying it is on the wrong track," Emerson College Polling Executive Director Spencer Kimball said in the results.

What has Mamdani done so far?

One of Mamdani's biggest challenges in office so far was a series of dangerous winter storms that pummeled the NYC region this year.

The death toll from the cold reached 29, according to Gothamist.

In the Marist poll, most New Yorkers believed he handled the bitter cold well, with 65% of those surveyed approving of his leadership during the time.

As for the Emerson poll respondents, 29% gave Mamdani an A score for his response to the storm, 33% gave him a B, 18% a C, 9% a D and 11% an F.
