What did AOC say to RFK? What to know on seemingly intense exchange

April 22, 2026Updated April 23, 2026, 8:28 a.m. ET

A now-viral photo shows Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaking with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in an animated conversation following a congressional hearing that grilled the health secretary on his department.

Ocasio-Cortez, a congresswoman from New York, first addressed Kennedy during the hearing, where she questioned him on why he chose to send more money to insurance companies.

The pair seemingly were in agreement on some points, but photos from after show the congresswoman confronting Kennedy.

What happened during the hearing?

RFK Jr. was asked to testify by the House Committee of Energy and Commerce. Ocasio-Cortez, using her time, pressed him on health insurance companies, and how the government recently decided to pay the industry more.

"The industry is saying that they're increasing these costs, but the industry is defrauding the public. So we know they're lying. We know they're lying through even their mechanisms. They are upcoding. They are telling us, the public, the government, Medicare, our systems, that people are sicker than they are so that they can get more money," Ocasio-Cortez said during the hearing.

"And if I’m hearing you correctly, we are giving them more money because they’re saying that they need it?"

Kennedy agreed that the industry was lying, but said he had to balance that with the impact on patients.

Why was AOC confronting RFK Jr.?

Photos taken after the hearing show the pair in what looks like an intense conversation.

The images, taken by Liz Essley Whyte of The Wall Street Journal, have since gone viral due to their body language.

It wasn't immediately clear what they were chatting about. However, the WSJ reporter replied to a comment asking if the two were arguing, writing that the conversation "appeared friendly."

Neither Kennedy or Ocasio-Cortez has addressed the exchange.
