"Saturday Night Live" used Martin's Tavern as the backdrop for its May 9 cold open, putting the longtime establishment in the national spotlight.

The sketch featured Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth — portrayed by Colin Jost — drinking at the bar alongside Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and FBI Director Kash Patel, played by Matt Damon and Aziz Ansari, respectively.

The scene, which poked fun at the alleged drinking habits of the three Donald Trump figures, sparked questions from viewers unfamiliar with the Washington DC landmark: Is Martin's Tavern a real place, or just a fictional setting created for the show?

Here's what to know about the iconic bar and restaurant featured on "SNL."

Is Martin's Tavern a real Washington DC bar?

Yes, and it's been around for nearly a century, opening in the Georgetown neighborhood in 1933.

The bar was established by William Gloyd "Billy" Martin, a former New York Yankee who opened the tavern alongside his father, William Martin.

"For 4 generations the Martin family has served every president from Harry S. Truman to George W. Bush, many of Washington’s most prominent movers and shakers, scores of Hollywood stars, Hall of Famers, and Broadway legends," fourth generation owner William (Billy) Martin says on the bar's website.

U.S. presidents and other Capitol Hill politicians have often dined at Martin's, among them being then-Senator John F. Kennedy, who proposed to future First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in Booth 3, now called The Proposal Booth.

Commemorative plaques have also been placed at booths where presidents Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon frequently sat.

More recently, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited the popular tavern on Labor Day "to thank the hardworking men and women serving our communities." The Washingtonian reported Patel, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and former U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi have all also been to the bar.

All presidents until Barack Obama have visited the bar, though Trump has not stopped by.
