Here's where Mamdani's rent freeze promise stands and what you can do

One of Zohran Mamdani's biggest promises on the campaign trail was a rent freeze.

Soon, that commitment may come to fruition.

Here is where the situation stands on Mamdani's rent freeze, and what happens next.

How could the rent be frozen in NYC?

Mamdani's affordability plan proposed freezing the rent on around one million rent-stabilized apartments.

But ultimately, the Rent Guidelines Board has the ultimate power to freeze the rent for said units.

In February, Mamdani appointed six members to the nine-member board, which decides annually if the rent should go up, and by how much.

What's currently going on with the rent freeze?

Last week, the board held a preliminary vote, where they supported proposed increases of 0% to 2% on one-year leases, and 0% to 4% on two-year leases for rent stabilized units. Seven members voted in favor.

What happens next?

The final vote will take place on June 25, and will likely fall in between the ranges.

Next, New Yorkers can testify at RGB hearings coming up.

Here are the upcoming hearings:

  • Queens: June 4 at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center Auditorium (5 p.m.)
  • Bronx: June 8 at the Main Theatre of Hostos Community College (5 p.m.)
  • Brooklyn: June 11 at The Theater at City Tech, NYC College of Technology (7 p.m.)
  • Manhattan: June 16 at Symphony Space (5 p.m.)

"As the RGB begins its public hearings, tenants, owners, and New Yorkers from every borough should make their voices heard and speak directly to what this housing crisis looks like in their lives," Mamdani said in a statement after the preliminary vote.

"I’m confident the Board will weigh those perspectives carefully and arrive at a decision later this summer that reflects the urgency of this moment.”
