Penn Station fire is over. Here's where the impact is for commuters
A fire broke out in Penn Station late Thursday morning, causing lasting delays for commuters.
A track blaze caused turmoil for multiple train services, including Amtrak and the Long Island Railroad.
Here is what's happening now, and how commutes will be affected.
Penn Station fire
A call was first received about a fire on the tracks at 11:22 a.m. May 14, according to the FDNY, at 31st Street between 7th and 8th Avenue.
The fire department said no injuries were reported and the blaze was under control around 1 p.m.
Delays from Penn Station fire
The LIRR is experiencing a large portion of the delays from the fire, with some lasting throughout the evening.
Here are the current delays as of late Thursday afternoon, according to the LIRR website:
- Babylon Branch: Reroute of trains, with Penn Station service suspended
- City Terminal Zone: Part suspended between Jamaica and Penn Station in both directions. Service to/from Grand Central not affected
- Port Jefferson Branch: Reroute this evening, with Penn Station service suspended. 6:47pm train from Penn Station to Huntington will originate at Grand Central
- Port Washington Branch: Trains are being rerouted, with Penn Station service suspended
- Ronkonkoma Branch: Penn Station service is suspended
- West Hempstead Branch: Penn Station service is suspended
Amtrak says that train service has restarted again, but that a delay of up to an hour should be expected in the area for the remainder of the day.
NJ TRANSIT is diverting its Midtown Direct service to Hoboken Terminal, too, as of Thursday afternoon.
