When President Donald Trump announced the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool would need to be repainted as part of a beautification restoration project, he said it would be completed in just a few weeks.

So why — now in mid May — is the project still incomplete?

Here's what to know about the progress of the restoration and when the pool's repainting to an "American Flag Blue" could be done.

How much work has been done on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool?

Crews were seen Wednesday, May 13, repairing the reflecting pool in several spots and painting it.

But the New York Times, citing government documents, said only 35% of its surface had been fully coated as of Sunday, May 10. Additionally, replacing leaking joints had yet to begin.

The work has been carried out by Atlantic Industrial Coatings, which was awarded the no-bid contract last month. Trump previously said the project was given to a "guy who's unbelievable at doing swimming pools," adding that the same group had worked on a pool at his Sterling, Virginia, golf club.

In comments on Truth Social this week, however, Trump said he "did not know" the contractor and had never used them before.

When will the reflecting pool construction be done?

The government contract awarded to Atlantic Industrial Coatings says the end date for the project is May 22, but it's unclear if that deadline will be met.

The documents say the firm will be given $13.1 million by the Department of the Interior, despite Trump initially saying the project would cost $1.8 million.

Officials have not given a recent timetable for when the reflecting pool renovations will be completed, only saying it will be restored before the country's 250th anniversary celebrations this summer.

Trump has made similar comments, saying last month the renovations would be done well before July 4, The Associated Press reported.
